Marital Journey Completed Through Nepal: An Experience

Although I was originally born in Punjab, India, and hold Indian citizenship, I have been living in the United States for many years. During my stay in the U.S., I have been working as a driver, and since I have been residing there as a refugee, I had only received a U.S. Travel Document. Without a passport, returning directly to India was not easy, so I had to look for an alternative option for an important process like marriage. In this context, I chose Nepal as a suitable destination because Nepal has clear legal provisions that allow even foreign nationals to establish marital relationships.

To understand Nepal’s legal procedures for marriage, the required documents, and any possible complications, I contacted Nepalese legal practitioner Krishna Prasai. Our initial telephone conversation itself was extremely helpful and guiding. Based on his suggestions and instructions, I decided to travel to Nepal within a few days. After arriving in Nepal, he thoroughly explained the legal process of marriage, document preparation, the method of registering the marriage at the district court, and the required timeframe. I realized that Nepal’s legal system is clear, well-organized, and structured in a way that is convenient even for foreign citizens.

The few days I spent in Nepal were truly meaningful. I had the opportunity to meet some friends there and gained a positive experience regarding the environment, society, and legal system. After preparing all required documents for the marriage, I invited my family members from Punjab to Nepal. Once they arrived, it became easier to proceed with the legal formalities. Under the supervision, support, and guidance of advocate Krishna Prasai, the marriage process was completed in a very simple and systematic manner. Court registration, necessary certificates, approvals, and other administrative tasks were all completed on time with his assistance.

After the marriage was completed, my family returned to India, while I traveled back to the United States. Since the marital relationship has now been legally registered, I will be able to invite my wife to the U.S. in the future—an important step for my personal and family life. In the short time I stayed in Nepal, I experienced a supportive environment, legal clarity, administrative simplicity, and professional integrity, all of which made my entire journey successful and meaningful.

Overall, choosing Nepal for my marriage became a significant turning point in my life. I am deeply grateful for the time I spent in Nepal and for all the assistance I received there.
